A significant conversation between Mr. Mahesh Amalean and Ms. Damayanthi Darsha OLY before her departure from Sri Lanka led to the creation of a meaningful initiative aimed at fostering the growth of Sri Lankan athletes. This dialogue laid the foundation for the formation of a selection committee at the 2023 All-Island Competition, where Sri Lanka’s Olympians played a pivotal role. From an initial pool of candidates, 250 athletes were selected, and following a rigorous practical test, 56 top athletes were chosen for further development. This culminated in the launch of the MAS Athletes Training Academy in July 2024.
The collaboration between MAS, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Sports, the Sri Lanka Athletic Association, and the Sri Lankan Olympians Association has created a strong foundation for this initiative. Currently, the 56 selected athletes from across Sri Lanka are undergoing training under the expert guidance of Ms. Sriyani Kulawansha OLY and her dedicated team. These athletes are now showcasing their talent not only within Sri Lanka but also on the international stage, competing alongside foreign athletes. Their commitment and passion are instrumental in shaping the future of Sri Lankan athletics.
The primary goal of this initiative is to secure an Olympic medal for Sri Lanka at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. The team is working relentlessly towards this vision, and we are incredibly grateful to all the supporters who have contributed to this project. A special thanks is extended to MAS, Mr. Ruwan Karagala, and the entire team for their generous investment of Rs. 650 million, which underscores their commitment to the future of Sri Lankan sports.
Through their hard work and determination, Sri Lankan Olympians are striving not only to produce world-class athletes but also to elevate Sri Lanka’s name on the global stage, with the goal of bringing home Olympic medals from the 2032 Brisbane Olympics
